The name Black Sabbath could also have been derived from a song penned by bass player Butler, who was something of a fan of Dennis Wheatley novels. It just so happened that the film was Karloff's Black Sabbath. The band was playing under the name 'Earth', but when they got confused with another English band of that same name, they grabbed the title off of a movie theater marquee across the street from where they were playing. Karloff was an actor credited with roles in numerous ghoulish films, including Frankenstein (1931), The Mummy (1932), and The Terror (1963). ![]() One version attributes it to a Boris Karloff film by that title. The story of how Black Sabbath received its name has multiple versions. By then, it was 1969 and their official lineup had stabilized, consisting of lead singer Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist and primary songwriter Tony Iommi (who has remained the only consistent band member since), bass player and primary lyricist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward. ![]() Still, there has always been an air of darkness over the band and their activities, evidenced by massive substance abuse, turmoil and hard feelings, and some lags in their commercial and critical success, at times.īlack Sabbath started in Birmingham, England in 1968, originally titled the Polka Tulk Blues Company, later switching to Earth, and finally landing on Black Sabbath. At most, the upside-down crosses, bat biting, and lyrics of death and morbidity are simply an experiment. Black Sabbath band members have maintained all along that the dark, Satanic imagery are really just an act. ![]()

As a demo of their 3D software, they created a spinning globe that could be zoomed into, similar to the Powers of Ten film. At the time, the company was developing 3D gaming software libraries. The core technology behind Google Earth was originally developed at Intrinsic Graphics in the late 1990s. Some countries have requested that certain areas be obscured in Google's satellite images, usually areas containing military facilities. Google Earth has been viewed by some as a threat to privacy and national security, leading to the program being banned in multiple countries. The web-based version of Google Earth also includes Voyager, a feature that periodically adds in-program tours, often presented by scientists and documentarians. Other features allow users to view photos from various places uploaded to Panoramio, information provided by Wikipedia on some locations, and Street View imagery. A flight simulator game is also included. Additional globes for the Moon and Mars are available, as well as a tool for viewing the night sky. In addition to Earth navigation, Google Earth provides a series of other tools through the desktop application, including a measure distance tool. In 2019, Google revealed that Google Earth now covers more than 97 percent of the world, and has captured 10 million miles of Street View imagery. Google Earth is able to show various kinds of images overlaid on the surface of the Earth and is also a Web Map Service client. Practice Hard and Pass the Texas Driving Test If you don’t retake the test in 90 days or if you've failed your second and third attempts, you'll have to file a new application and pay the application fee again. If you didn't pass, you can retake the test two more times within 90 days. The examiner lets you know right away if you passed or failed and provides feedback on your driving strengths and weaknesses. They include violating the law, refusing to follow instructions, driving dangerously or crashing, or having over 30 points deducted on your driving test. There are four things that your instructor will immediately fail you for. Posture - Sit up straight, keep your hands in the proper position on the wheel, and don't rest your elbows on the window. Right-of-way - Yield to those who have the right of way.įollowing, passing, and lane observance - Follow at a safe distance and pass at the right times. Turns - Turn without entering other lanes. Intersection observance - Enter any intersections properly and slowly. Using the clutch - Use the clutch without grinding gears and shift properly. Traffic signals - Obey all traffic signs and signals. Stop signs - Stop completely at stop signs. Quick stop - Stop as quickly as possible without skidding while going 20 MPH.īacking up - Back up for around 60 feet while using mirrors, backup cameras, and looking backward. A neutral oxygen atom (Z = 8) has eight electrons, and if it gains two electrons it will become an anion with a 2− charge (8 − 10 = 2−).įigure 2.12 (a) Insufficient iodine in the diet can cause an enlargement of the thyroid gland called a goiter. If this atom loses one electron, it will become a cation with a 1+ charge (11 − 10 = 1+). For example, a neutral sodium atom (Z = 11) has 11 electrons. Positively charged atoms called cations are formed when an atom loses one or more electrons. An atom that gains one or more electrons will exhibit a negative charge and is called an anion. The charge of an atom is defined as follows:Ītomic charge = number of protons − number of electronsĪs will be discussed in more detail later in this chapter, atoms (and molecules) typically acquire charge by gaining or losing electrons. When the numbers of these subatomic particles are not equal, the atom is electrically charged and is called an ion. ![]() This “missing” mass is known as the mass defect, and you will learn about it in the chapter on nuclear chemistry.)Ītomic number ( Z ) = number of protons mass number ( A ) = number of protons + number of neutrons A − Z = number of neutrons atomic number ( Z ) = number of protons mass number ( A ) = number of protons + number of neutrons A − Z = number of neutronsĪtoms are electrically neutral if they contain the same number of positively charged protons and negatively charged electrons. (An observant student might notice that the sum of an atom’s subatomic particles does not equal the atom’s actual mass: The total mass of six protons, six neutrons, and six electrons is 12.0993 amu, slightly larger than 12.00 amu. The properties of these fundamental particles are summarized in Table 2.2. The electron has a charge of 1− and is a much lighter particle with a mass of about 0.00055 amu (it would take about 1800 electrons to equal the mass of one proton). A neutron is a slightly heavier particle with a mass 1.0087 amu and a charge of zero as its name suggests, it is neutral. The fundamental unit of charge (also called the elementary charge) equals the magnitude of the charge of an electron (e) with e = 1.602 × × 10 −19 C.Ī proton has a mass of 1.0073 amu and a charge of 1+. Many literature resources, including this text, use the older term atomic mass unit (amu) when referring to the u or the Da. ![]() The dalton (Da) is an alternative mass unit that is equivalent to the u. The unified atomic mass unit is defined as exactly 1/12 of the mass of a single atom of the carbon-12 isotope (more on isotopes is provided later in this section) and is equal to 1.6605 × × 10 −24 g. When describing the properties of tiny objects such as atoms, we use appropriately small units of measure, such as the unified atomic mass unit (u) and the fundamental unit of charge (e). For example, a carbon atom weighs less than 2 × × 10 −23 g, and an electron has a charge of less than 2 × × 10 −19 C (coulomb). The diameter of an atom is on the order of 10 −10 m, whereas the diameter of the nucleus is roughly 10 −15 m-about 100,000 times smaller. The nucleus contains the majority of an atom’s mass because protons and neutrons are much heavier than electrons, whereas electrons occupy almost all of an atom’s volume. ![]() It was learned that an atom contains a very small nucleus composed of positively charged protons and uncharged neutrons, surrounded by a much larger volume of space containing negatively charged electrons. The development of modern atomic theory revealed much about the inner structure of atoms. ![]() ![]() Your ridges add texture to life, and your resilient nature makes you a force to be reckoned with.įarfalle (Bowtie): Playful and charming, you approach life with a whimsical flair.
